Welcome to mob-it and thank you for joigning us in this adventure.
Mob-it is a very simple service that gives you the ability to transform a RSS feed into a mobile portal application. This means that you just have to enter the address of your feed (RSS or ATOM) and the service will provide you with a mobile application with the look & feel of your choice that you will be able to download to your phone.
Mob-it is very different from other services as the application acts as a Java game, so it is very accessible on your phone, dedicated to your content, and can display your own icon and the name you will choose.
Most of it, your application can be forwarded to any of your friends easily from your phone.
How does mob-it work?
Mob-it takes the content of a selected website through its RSS feed. In simple three steps, it lets you decide what type of portal you will want to see downloaded on your mobile and on your friends' mobile phones as well.
In order to do this, mob-it aggregates the content of a selected website, put its content into a mobile application and generates a complete portal to be downloaded on a mobile phone. This operation is fast and once your application is downloaded, it is resident on your phone and you don't have to use the network again until next update.
Mob-it makes your personalized application available on a fixed URL, accessible through your mobile WAP browser. The link can also be sent through a sms sent by mob-it servers. This sms can be sent through a widget generated on mob-it web site (a simple HTML code to paste onto any website) or directly through the platform. In order to send out sms from the widget or grom the platform, you need to buy credits from mob-it. Credits will be used each time an sms is sent on a mobile phone.
Why RSS and ATOM?
We decided to go for RSS support because we felt that this format was and is standardized for content propagation and sharing accross the Internet and on mobile. But we did not want to build another RSS reader for mobiles because most of them are not compatible with many mobile devices and are not dedicated for content sharing. Most of it, it requires complex settings and is data consuming. For us, RSS only represents one of the formats to get data to your mobile. We are working on many other format to aggregate and will be releasing support for them in the future.
What type of RSS feeds does Mob-It understand?
Right now, RSS 0.97, RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and ATOM feeds are interpreted by mob-it. We are expanding support for any XML feeds.
How do I know I have the latest version of my content?
From the menu of the application on your phone, it is possible to manually check if you have the latest version of the content. in order to do so, open your mob-it application and go to the 'Menu' by pressing the relevant softkey button. One of the options is named 'Check for updates'. Enter this option and press 'Connect'. It will then initiate a download of the newest version available.
Are the available applications compatible with my mobile phone?
We are using a very exclusive technology that enables us to be compatible with more than 95% of the currently released mobile phones. The mobile phone needs to be Java compliant (if your mobile can download games, it has a great chance to be compatible). Since we also address older phones (MIDP 1.0) we use one of the most powerful technology in the market to ensure you the best compatibility with your mobile and your friends' mobiles.
Once downloaded, where is located my mob-It Portal on my phone?
Your mob-it portal is located among all of your java games or applications on your phone. It really depends on your phone's brand and model, but usually, you will have it stored in the 'general menu' (for Nokia phones), in the 'games/applications' folder or in 'JAVA' folder of your phone. The application is persistent, this means you can access it anytime, without any need to acces the network.
Will my data transfer bill explode if I use Mob-it?
Nope. Mob-it is designed in a way that you download the application like a Java game. Therefore, there are no communications that you are not aware of. Once the application (aka portal) is on your mobile or your friends' mobiles, there are no more data transfers and you can have access to it anywhere, anytime.
How do I send the portal to my friends?
This is very easy. Open your mob-it application and go to the 'Options' menu by pressing the relevant soft key button. One of the first option is named 'Send to a friend'. Select it and read what is explained in this screen. Click again, enter your friend's mobile phone number and press "send". This will process a SMS directly from your mobile to your friend's mobile giving him all the indications for a fast download of your mobile portal.
It does not cost anything else than the SMS that is sent from your mobile (included in you operator's plan if applicable), and it is so easy that your friends will be able to share this application with other friends as well.
Will my friends be able to subscribe to updates of my portal?
Yes, they will. They will juste have to follow the instructions mentionned in the "HOW DO I GET THE UPDATES OF MY FEED?" question.
Can I get rid of the ads?
If you see ads in your application, that means that you are a free user of mob-it. We did not want to restrict the service to users would be forced to pay to have their mobile portals. So we have a free version with ads and a paid version without any ad. The paid version is the same version than the free one, except that it has been notified through a package bought on mob-it website.
Each time you pay for a notification or that you paid to recieve the link of the portal via SMS, the application downloaded is ad-free.
How much does it cost?
Mob-it is free. You can freely generate any application you want and download it without paying any money. Every download will still cost you the price of a data communication priced by your mobile operator (refer to your operator and subscribed plan).
The only charged service are the sms. If you want to tell your friends about your application or subscribe to automatic notifications via SMS containing the WAP link of your content (for an easier download), you need to buy credits for your account. Go to the 'Add credits' section of your account for further details about the exact costs.
Is it possible to send some content from my phone to a Mob-It portal?
For sure. And it has been made easy as many services are in the market right now allowing anyone to post images, text and even video from their mobile phones. Flickr, for example, allows you to send photos via email (also from your phone), but there are many other tools that give you the ability to post from your phone (moblogs). You will have a better idea of the solutions on our forum (
http://forum.mob-it.net)
Why can't I access my phone directory within the application?
Because mob-it currently use Java (J2ME) to run on mobile phones, an application cannot access directly the directory in a universal way. As we are working in optimizing the service, we will make our best to have this feature available when the mobile phone has the technology allowing phonebook access within the application.
Some articles aren't complete, how come?
If the article seems not complete, this is due to your feed. Mob-it only displays the content available in the feed. If the feed only shows a small portion of the news, you will only be able to view this small portion.
Sometime, the Mob-It logo is displayed when I am expecting a photo, why is that?
This happens when there is no image available in your RSS feed for a specific article/post. The image is replaced by a generic image.
I am trying to send the portal to a friend but nothing happens...
Some phones do not support sending SMS from an Java application. In this case, the application should tell you that the SMS has not been sent. You will still have access to the application by typing the address displayed on the screen (something like :
http://wap.matawa.com/65.jad or
http://www.mob-it.com/72.jad). In very rare cases, some mobile phones display a success message when sending the link to download the application via SMS but nothing is sent. In this specific case, we have still included the wap address in the creen displayed on the mobile. You will juste have to type in this adress or give it to your friends for them to download your portal.
I have defined a logo but a generic image appears
Unfortunately, support for applications logos is not universal on the phone. If you don't see it appear, this means that your phone does not support application logos or that mob-it does not use the correct and widespread format.
